The Pan African Thoracic Society – Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research (PATS-MECOR) course was started in 2007 and has run annually since. From 2007 to 2009 in Blantyre, Malawi and in 2010 to 2014 in Brackenhurst, Kenya.

The course was initiated by Professor Stephen Gordon of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and is based on the successful American Thoracic Society (ATS) MECOR programme It is designed for pulmonary clinicians, investigators, and academicians to provide training in research methods.

There are 3 levels of the course available. Obtain further details of these levels

We are pleased to announce that funding has been secured from the Medical Research Council under their Partnership Grant scheme for the next 5 years. This will enable courses to be held as part of a wider collaborative BREATHE Africa partnership. We are also grateful for a very generous donation from an anonymous benefactor and from the Aldama Foundation.

Details of the 2015 course will shortly be available.

The major funder of the programme from 2007 – 2011 was the Nuffield Foundation under their Africa Programme. We are very grateful for their support which allowed the programme of annual courses to be established. In 2012, 2013 and 2014 the course was funded by a private donor, by the Aldama Foundation and by the American Thoracic Society.

PATS MECOR is also supported by the American Thoracic Society, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
